The Tour
We'll leave from Anchorage at 7 AM to get an early start from the trailhead at the Mother Lode Lodge. After touring eight-miles up Mint Creek, we'll make a steep climb up to the Mint hut, a small hut perched on a bench overlooking the Mint Glacier and surrounding peaks. From our tents near the Mint Hut we'll make a steep climb to the Tenemint Gap for a long powder run down the Penny Royal Glacier to the secluded Bomber Hut. If weather allows, we can stay a second night near the Bomber Hut to ski the surrounding glaciers, and explore the B-29 bomber that crashed in 1957. From our tents near the Bomber Hut we continue down another 700 vertical feet before climbing back up to the Snowbird Glacier where we have the option of staying another night near the Snowbird Hut to make runs or continuing back down to our car at the Mother Lode Lodge while viewing the Chugach Mountains in the distance.

These 1-5 day excursions give advanced alpine skiers the knowledge needed for skiing in the backcountry. The courses will cover weather and avalanche forecasting, setting a solid and efficient skin track, evaluating snow stability, and practicing the industry standard travel techniques. For multi-day courses, we have the option of staying out and practicing winter camping skills.

These courses are geared toward advanced alpine skiers who want to learn the safest backcountry travel skills. Participants need to supply their own backcountry gear (see gear list). All methods will be taught at a national standard set by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) and American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE).
