Starting in December, Turnagain Pass becomes the powder stash of South Central Alaska. Like the Hatcher Pass Powder option, this is a great choice for those with some backcountry experience who want hundreds of turns, and to learn a few advanced backcountry tricks along the way. We'll head away from the crowds at Sunburst and Tincan and find untracked snow and a big day in the mountains.
See a map of Turnagain Pass and Hatcher Pass.

We'll head for the mountains along Turnagain Pass including Pastoral, Pete's and Bertha Peak. If your super-fit, and up for a 12 hour day, then we can try Bench Peak near Johnson Pass.

These 1-5 day excursions give advanced alpine skiers the knowledge needed for skiing in the backcountry. The courses will cover weather and avalanche forecasting, setting a solid and efficient skin track, evaluating snow stability, and practicing the industry standard travel techniques. For multi-day courses, we have the option of staying out and practicing winter camping skills.
These courses are geared toward advanced alpine skiers who want to learn the safest backcountry travel skills. Participants need to supply their own backcountry gear (see gear list). All methods will be taught at a national standard set by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) and American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE).
